There are so many types of “Christian Counseling” practices out there. Some of them are not even Christian but use the word as a marketing ploy to draw Jesus-followers into a counselor with a vague familiarity of the Bible.
Other practices may be outright weird or even use subtle forms of spiritual abuse by not understanding the Gospel of grace in the Bible.
My approach is based on the love and grace that has been shown to me.
As a therapist, I see people from different backgrounds. I have worked with the homeless, the wealthy, the young, the old, people with different skin colors, and unconventional worldviews.
“Christian Counseling” is not a modality or a method in my therapy practice. I do not tag on some Bible verses as a closing thought and call it Christian Counseling.
I ask to pray with my clients, but that is not all I do. With my theological and clinical background, my calling is to use both to bring Healing, Hope, and Happiness to my client’s life.
It’s About Truth!
You may have heard the saying, “All truth is God’s truth.” This message has been taught for centuries from St. Augustine to John Calvin and recently by R.C. Sproul.
It simply means that the nature of God’s Word is true, just like all truth in general revelation throughout the world.
We are learning at break-neck speeds how the brain functions and helps us move, breathe, and have our being. But nowhere in Scripture does it talk about the neuropathways that make up our habits. Yet, it is still true and can help us heal.
How does this apply to Christian Counseling?
Regardless of what a person believes, most people believe humans are spiritual on some level. As a man who seeks Truth and desires to live my life in the way my Maker intends, I cannot divorce life’s challenges from the blueprints of life that God gives us – the Bible.
Jesus Christ is a God who loves you and cares for all the big and little things in your life. You cannot earn more of His love. That love is entirely yours because of what Christ has already done on our behalf.
Christ cares so much that He went from being Spirit to being Spirit and man so that He could pay the price for you to be free, whole, and forgiven.
God’s desire for you is redemption and restoration.
Therefore, my goal in counseling is to help bring redemption to the hard parts of life and restore your soul as God intends it to be.
The Bible and what God desires for everyone are essential in my approach to Christian Counseling.
