The purpose of marriage may not be what you think.
Since the invention of television, our definition and purpose of marriage has changed. And it is not for the better.
Thanks to Hollywood and the continued decline of our individualistic “me” culture, expectations of what marriage should look and feel like are skewed.
Before your disappointment causes you to stop reading, I am not saying that marriages cannot be happy and that you cannot have seasons of erotic romance. I am saying that those are not God’s purpose and goal in marriage but the fruit from a healthy marriage.
God has much deeper joys and satisfaction planned for you and your spouse. He desires for you to know Himself more intimately, your spouse more thoroughly, and yourself with astonishing clarity.
The task is not easy.
Knowing God, your spouse, and yourself comes from a lifetime of commitments to one another. It comes from being resilient through trials, heartaches, and shattered dreams.
But, there are moments and maybe seasons when you doubt and question if it is worth it.
Half of the other marriages are giving up, so what is one more?
Marriages require care and cultivation.
My neighbor enjoys working on her grass. It is a flat, level, and smooth yard where you can look over and see one consistent blanket of grass. Think golf course – it is all one color of green with no interruption throughout the acre lot.
You look at my yard. It is bumpy and wavy ground, dirt patches every 20-30 yards, and probably three different grass/weeds at varying heights, overall a disappointing view.
I want my neighbor’s grass! How come it does not grow on this side of the fence?
Well, my neighbor invests a lot of time, money, and hard work to cultivate the pastoral grassy scene. Regularly, she is out there driving her tractor back and forth with some fertilizer on the back, giving little droplets of nutrition to each blade.
She takes time to pick out small patches of weedy grass when it pops up (probably from my yard). She waters it with a strict regimen during the summer dry months. Regularly, one will see her patrolling her yard in the evening for any sign of unhealthiness or disorder trying to discourage her lawn.
Um, I don’t do any of that. I mow it; sometimes, I use a weed wacker.
People think that grass is greener on the other side.
But, the grass is greener where you water it. The grass is greener where you nurture and feed it.
If I bought my neighbor’s house and yard, I would enjoy her nice green lawn… for a while.
Eventually, the weeds would spring up, the grass would dry up, and dirt patches would show up just like my current yard.
Beautiful yards require vigilance and tending.
I do not need to go and buy my neighbor’s yard. I need to take care of my own.
My lawn will look as beautiful through time as hers, and I bet more beautiful than hers because it is my lawn! I will have studied my lawn; learned from it; and sacrificed and invested time, money, blood, sweat, and tears for the beautification of my marriage – I mean, my lawn.
It is so easy to let your mind wander over where the grass appears to be greener. But the grass is greener where you water it, nurture, and care for it.
A loving and lasting marriage requires cultivating, just like my neighbor’s lawn.
